Markku Nurminen


Doctor Markku Nurminen, MA (Mathematics, Physics), PhD (Statistics), University of Helsinki, Finland, and DrPH (Epidemiology, dissertation approved with honours), University of Tampere, Finland, is presently Senior Research Consultant of the MarkStat Consultancy, Helsinki, Finland, and Adjunct Professor of Biometry at the Department of Public Health, Faculty of Medicine, the University of Helsinki, Finland.

Dr. Nurminen has acquired scientific qualifications required for the post of: Professor of Statistics, especially Biostatistics, University of Lund, Sweden; Associate Professor of Biometry, University of Tampere; and Associate Professor of Epidemiology, University of Helsinki. He is a specialist in applied statistics and risk analysis, as well as in scientific research methodology in the fields of occupational, environmental and clinical epidemiology.

He has achieved administrative skills as the Head of Statistics Section (1975-1983) and acting as the Director of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health (FIOH) in 1994. Until retirement from the FIOH at the end of 2008 he held the post of Senior Research Scientist in the Work and Society Team of the Centre of Excellence for Good Practices and Competence.

Dr. Nurminen has worked as a Senior Principal Research Scientist in the Epidemiology Unit of the Australian National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety and was a Visiting Academic at the Department of Occupational Health, Faculty of Medicine of the University of Sydney, 1991-1992
. In this period he was involved in postgraduate teaching in the subjects epidemiology and biostatistics.

Nurminen was, since the founding of the Scandinavian Journal of Work Environment and Health, the Assistant Editor in Chief of the Journal for 20 years, 1975-1994. He acted as a Member of the Editorial Board of The Internet Journal of Epidemiology since its founding in 2002 until 2008. In these posts, he has gained a long professional experience in manuscript editing and reviewing work. He has administered multiple courses under the auspices of the Nordic Institute of Advanced Training in Occupational Health, 1980-2002. He also has proficiency in teaching biostatistics and epidemiology at the university level.

Dr. Nurminen has focused his career on the development and application of the statistical concepts and methods of epidemiologic research. His research has spanned a range of health problems, incl. asbestos-related diseases (mesothelioma, lung cancer, asbestosis), cardiovascular disease, low back pain, congenital malformations, and organ (liver, renal) transplantations, occupational mortality, and linking environmental exposures to adverse health outcomes.

He has co-edited
two international guidelines volumes on health and environment analysis for the Office of Global and Integrated Environmental Health of the World Health Organization and has worked as a temporary consultant and lecturer, 1992-1998. He has given expert evaluations for foreign universities and international organizations.

Dr. Nurminen has two university thesis publications and has contributed to 35 academic researchers’ dissertations written mainly by medical scholars. He has also published one pedagogic book on occupational health epidemiology and another on the demographic measure of working life expectancy, as well as (co)authored over 250 research items with 4,100 citations in ResearchGate, most of which are original articles,
reviews or book chapters, and research reports on empirical epidemiologic studies and statistical methodology in international scientific journals.
